Parenting Tip – from Dan Allender

Dan Allender in his book “How Children Raise Parents” indicates that every child is fundmentally asking two questions in life.

1. Am I loved? and 2. Can I get my own way?

Allender says that children must know that the overwhelming answer to question 1 is YES!! Loved more than words can express. A kind of love that is not bought with money and toys but a kind of love that is expressed with quality time, words of affirmation, lots of hugs and kisses and consistent modeling by the parents! Children can feel authentic love. Then the answer to question 2 must be an absolute, NO! You may not have your way all the time. Parents often give in to children’s demands for things, toys, TV, junk food and other bad things because parents want to be liked by their children! Giving in to children’s unhealthy demands only hurts them and the parents. It is a lose, lose, proposition. The only way to win is to say “yes” authentic love and “no” to selfish desires.

Living in the Truth – Awakenings teaching at Willow Creek’s Marriage Matters

Recently, I taught a workshop at Marriage Matters and the topic for the night was all about living in the truth. I believe that facts are your friends! In fact, living in the truth will set you free from all kinds of problems. When we know the truth about ourselves the we become more authentic as people. We spend less time managing an image of ourselves and we can be free to just BE ourselves. I wise man once said, if you know the truth then the truth will set you free! We want that for anyone who joins us at Awakenings!

Marriage Tip – Time Together

As our lives get busier with kids or careers and interests in life it is so important that husbands and wives spend quality time together. Watching a movie together can be fun but not the most connecting or fruitful time. Try this: at 8pm both decide to be home, put the kids to bed or shut of facebook or any media, light a candle and have something to drink together. Maybe some nice tea, or glass of wine, perhaps a fruit smoothie. Just sit on the sofa together and relax… see where the conversation goes.
